Australian student visa (subclass 500): a practical guide

Applying for Australia's student visa (subclass 500) from India: CoE, the Genuine Student requirement, financial capacity, OSHC, English, health checks and work rights.

Australia’s Student visa (subclass 500) covers degrees, vocational courses and English courses. Since 2024 the focus is on whether you are a genuine student — so a clear, honest explanation of your plans matters as much as your documents.

1. Offer and Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

Choose a course registered for international students (on CRICOS), accept the offer and pay the deposit the institution asks for. It then issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which you need for the visa application.

2. The Genuine Student requirement

Your application answers questions about your circumstances, your previous studies and work, why you chose this course and provider, and how it will help your future. Answer specifically and honestly — vague or copied answers are a common reason for refusal.

3. Financial capacity

Show that you can pay for your course fees, living costs (the government sets a minimum amount, updated from time to time), travel and, if they come with you, your family’s costs. Bank statements, education loans and sponsors’ income proof are typical evidence.

4. OSHC, English, health and character

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the whole length of your visa
  • An English test result (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and others), unless you are exempt
  • Health examinations if asked, and character requirements

5. Apply online

Apply through ImmiAccount, pay the visa application charge and give biometrics if requested. Keep the details of your application identical to your CoE and documents.

Documents checklist

  • Passport and CoE
  • Genuine Student statement and supporting evidence
  • Proof of funds
  • OSHC policy
  • English test result and academic documents
  • Work experience letters, if any

Work and after your studies

Student visa holders can usually work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. After graduating, you may be eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), depending on your course and age.
